Stay on Your Feet is a community partnership project that was designed to increase and promote community awareness of falls prevention through seven initiatives that were launched in the KFL&A region over the past two years and funded by the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation.
The project continues with new goals and objectives established to direct and guide the coalition and its work over the next 2 years. The five goals are: Awareness, Education/Skill building, Policy Development, Partnerships with Health Care Providers and Community Agencies, and Funding sources. |

DID YOU KNOW?
- Between October 2003 and October 2004 there were 1551 persons over age 55 seen in Kingston emergency departments because of a fall.
- Falls are a serious health risk for seniors with one in three seniors 65 years and over suffering a fall each year.
- Falls are a major cause of injury and death with the most common injuries being fracture of a hip, limb or injury to the head.
- Falls have devastating consequences such as broken bones, fear of falling again and a loss of independence.
- 3.6 billion dollars are spent nationally each year on fall-related injuries.
- The average length of a hospital stay after a fall is 17 days.
- 40 percent of nursing home admissions can be directly related to a fall.
